mary lou's Story

I moved from Ventura the summer after graduation to the Dallas, TX area....where I attended Univ. of Dallas, a small academic Catholic liberal arts college. I graduated 1968 cum laude, with a major in Art. I married Dan Weaver in 1969, and moved to upstate NY where I taught high school art for 2 yrs (while he was in graduate school in ceramic design). In 1971, we moved to Maine (Schoodic Peninsula, where part of Acadia National Park is) and set up a commercial pottery studio and retail store. I also made one-of-a-kind quilts, and did liturgical design commissions. Did that for almost 19 years. Post divorce (and annulment), I moved to Winter Harbor (on the same peninsula) and began teaching art again. This time, to K-12 students in two grammar schools; very demanding...but I loved it. My long-term boyfriend is Dale Torrey Sr, a lobster fisherman.....I worked as his sternman two summers, and that was incredible. After almost 25 years, we are still "together"....best friends & soulmates, who live across the street (why it's lasted so long!). He's incredibly funny & a great storyteller. Whatever works is my motto! I have a small one-story home with a gorgeous view of Frenchman Bay and Cadillac Mountain (on Mt. Desert Island, where Bar Harbor is). I love watching birds (one of the largest migratory paths in US) and wild life(deer, moose, fox, beaver, coyotes, racoons, et al), sunsets & Mother Ocean. I am retired from teaching, but still creating art....and just built a garage/art stud...Expand for more
io in 2011. I had a liver transplant in 2002, due to a rare disease of the bile ducts (primary sclerosing colangitis, aka "Walter Payton Disease"). I've met my donor family, and learned all about my organ donor Jamie, who was 25 when he died....he's my hero! I cannot teach (lots of issues, being immuno-compromised), but I do lots of volunteer work in the arts. I get grants and ran programs for the Winter Harbor Public Library for years, largely children's authors and illustrators....but also writing workshops for adults with published authors. I'm focusing on my own work right now, & I'm on the advisory board of Schoodic Arts for All which has an annual arts festival the first 2 wks of August. I also help with the biennial Schoodic Internat'l Sculpture Symposium, and am on the board for Schoodic Community Fund (philanthropic foundation). Also, you'll be surprised to know, I am a professed third order Carmelite.....prayer has always been the way for me! Like most of you, I am now 67 and rather amazed to be here.....each day is a GIFT. I finally feel better/younger/more energetic than I have in years! New life with creating & tutoring art, and writing/singing music, and continued community work. I always wanted to be an artist and/or singer/musician when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was an impractical idea. As it turns out, they were dead wrong....dreams sometimes come true. Oh yeah, and I invent things....working on my first patentable idea NOW. Deo gratias!
